Get Expert, Inside Info On Chronic Disorganization
The Institute for Chronic Disorganization (ICD) has long been an invaluable resource for professional organizers, with hundreds of classes on issues around chronic disorganization. These classes, taught by leading experts in their fields, look at things like attention deficit disorder, procrastination, and hoarding, to name a few. The classes explain how and why people who suffer from these disorders and tendencies may have difficulty with organizing. The experts also offer ideas for professional organizers to use, so that we can be more effective when we work with our chronically disorganized clients.
The ICD announced on November 1, 2011 that it will now offer four classes — formerly available only to professional organizers — to the general public. The cost is $10 per class. You “attend” the class by listening to it on your phone. For more information and to sign up, visit http://www.challengingdisorganization.org and click on Help for the Disorganized. When the pull-down menu appears, click on Public Teleclasses.

No More Hazardous Waste Hauling
Well, it’s a bad-news sort-of-good-news announcement.
One of the organizing services I’ve provided to clients since I started Central Carolina Organizing in 2007 is hauling hazardous household waste to the dump. Hazardous household waste includes household chemicals (cleaning products), paint and painting supplies (paint stripper, stain, etc.), lawn and garden chemicals, motor oil and so on. Unfortunately I can no longer provide this service as North Carolina law requires that businesses hauling hazardous waste obtain a license to do so.
The good news is that recycling hazardous household waste is FREE at the dumps in Orange, Durham and Wake Counties. Also, you don’t have to wait for a specific day of the year to drop off your stuff; the hazardous household waste facilities at the dumps are open weekdays. For more info on the dump in your county, visit your county’s website.
New Name For NSGCD
The National Study Group on Chronic Disorganization recently changed its name to the Institute for Challenging Disorganization. The ICD “explores, develops, and communicates information, organizing techniques, and solutions to professional organizers, related professionals and the public.” I’ve been a member of this organization for several years. If you want to check them out, go to http://www.challengingdisorganization.com/.
Get Your Consignment/Donation Manual
The North Carolina Chapter of the National Association of Professional Organizers published its “NAPO-North Carolina Organizer’s Reference Manual” in December. The book lists (almost) all the consignment shops, donation sites, and recycling centers in Durham, Orange and Wake Counties in North Carolina. This valuable tool tells you where to take items you no longer want or need, from craft supplies to hazardous waste to clothing, furniture and building materials. You can purchase a copy of the Manual by contacting Deanne Morgan at 919-949-2244. The cost is $10.00 plus postage. All proceeds go to NAPO-NC.
Forget About Donating Your Rubber Ducky
A new federal law designed to protect children from lead and certain ingredients in some plastics went into effect in February 2009. The law makes it illegal to sell items with lead and the plastic components known as phthalates. Most thrift, consignment and charity shops in the area no longer accept any children’s products containing metal or plastic. For more information on the new law, see my article.
New Law Restricts Toy Donations
The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act went into effect on February 10, 2009. The law bans the sale of children’s products:
- containing more than 600 parts per million total lead;
- containing more than .1% of certain specific phthalates;
- the Consumer Protection Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled.
Children’s products are products designed for children age 12 and under.
Goodbye Rubber Ducky
According to the CPSC, phthalates “are a group of chemicals (oily, colorless liquids) that are used, among other things, to make vinyls and other plastics soft and flexible.” (See http://www.cpsc.gov/ABOUT/Cpsia/smbus/cpsiasbguide.pdf). Items that fall into this category may include bath toys, inflatable pools, “general use balls,” bibs, bottles, cribs, booster seats and pacifiers, the agency says. read the entire article»»
